Music : Intent and Implementation

Music is a powerful, unique form of communication which crosses barriers of culture, language and race.  As an integral part of culture, past and present, it helps pupils understand themselves and relate to others.

In line with the National Curriculum for music, all pupils:

• Will perform, listen to, review and evaluate music

• Are taught to sing, create and compose music

• Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated

At Roe Green Infant School, music is taught weekly through the ‘Music Made’ scheme.  Children enjoy and gain a firm understanding of what music is through questioning, listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing. Our objective is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all genres of music. Through singing and performing, children learn about the structure and organisation of music; while encouraging their descriptive language skills and the use of subject specific music vocabulary. The music curriculum incorporates a variety of opportunities to use tuned and un-tuned instruments to explore how music is created.
