Design Technology: Intent and Implementation
Giving children the creativity, tools and confidence to design, make and evaluate products that solve real problems.
At Roe Green Infant School, our intent is to provide high quality design and technology lessons that encourage all children to use creativity and imagination — to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Design and technology is a rigorous and practical subject that should inspire children and provide opportunities for collaborative work, investigation, problem solving and evaluation. Throughout KS1 we follow a school-based scheme alongside the Kapow D.T. scheme.
Design purposeful, functional and appealing products based on design criteria.
Make products using a wide range of materials, learning to use tools safely to cut, shape, join and finish.
Think creatively and take design risks, then evaluate their product using technical vocabulary.
A bespoke children's kitchen
Children learn to prepare nutritious, healthy food from scratch — including the importance of hygiene, measuring accurately with a range of scales, and handling kitchen tools safely. All staff receive training on INSET days to support this.
The teaching of DT provides many opportunities for cross-curricular working: learning about nutrition and healthy diets as part of science, shape and space within maths to support different 3D structures, and the use of information and communication technology to research topics — preparing pupils for the next stage in their education. Pupils are provided with feedback during lessons, and opportunities for reflection.
